Robert Hooper Photography is pleased to be a recommended photographer for Oaks Farm Barn.
Located in Shirley in Surrey just a few miles from Croydon, Oaks Farm is a lovely wedding venue with an intimate feel and plenty of charm on offer.
There are two main reception rooms - the Victorian Barn, and the Orangery. The barn where the wedding ceremony is held boasts wooden beams overhead and Oak flooring underfoot, both of which help set the atmosphere inside. The feel is warm and cosy.
From a photography point of view, although certainly not the darkest wedding venue we've been to, the fairly low ambient light does mean we have to stay on the ball to get great pictures! Fortunately, large doors at the 'business end' ensure that the best light falls on the wedding couple where the actual ceremony takes place.
The staff are very helpful and friendly at all times, making both guests and us photographers feel right at home...
Gardens and Pond
Outside, the gardens are pretty with both open areas where guests can gather in good weather, and a little apple orchard. There is a lovely lily pond and an arbour, with Wysteria growing all around it (looks beautiful in bloom) both of which give the photographer extra photo opportunities for taking romantic portraits of the bride and groom alone.

Orchard Cottage - a hide for the bride
As well as the main barn and the orangery, there is also a tiny cottage, perfect for the bride and bridesmaids to get ready in. This gives us another photo location for bridal portraits and detail shots of shoes, rings, and dress etc - and also gives the bride a base where she can take a quiet moment if she needs to!
The Orangery
Once the ceremony is completed, guests can wander out to the Orangery where drinks are served. Being glass covered, this is a lovely light area, allowing for great candid photography of guests to be taken, using the natural light available. If the weather is good, guests can also spill out onto the decking area outside, or the gardens.
Oaks Farm as a wedding venue: a review in summary
All in all, Oaks Farm is a surprisingly charming and picturesque wedding venue nestled close to both Croydon and London, and can make for some wonderful wedding photos when handled well. Recommended.
