Modern, reportage, photojournalism, traditional…

Many styles and buzzwords are used these days. So what do they mean? If you ask a hundred wedding photographers you’ll probably get a hundred different answers.

Here’s what we think:

Modern style: A contemporary set of images taken with a creative flair. Something a little different, and much less ‘stuffy’ than the old school of wedding photography from years ago. Images should be of high quality, and also exhibit a modern twist – something you perhaps wouldn’t expect to find in your parents’ wedding albums!

Reportage, documentary or Photojournalism: A popular phrase indeed. The true photojournalist wedding photographer has little or no interaction and/or effect on the wedding at all, simply recording the event as a ‘fly on the wall’. This is great if you really like the hands off approach – but be careful this isn’t simply confused with a “we don’t do formals” from somebody who doesn’t know how to pose people properly – or worse still – simple snapshots from an enthusiastic amateur. A skilled photojournalist should have the skills to find and record the real moments on your wedding day as they occur – while at the same time remembering to carefully compose the image, isolate the subject, and make a perfect exposure – often under very difficult circumstances. These skills take years to perfect and should not be confused with stumbling across the odd good photo by chance – you’ll want to know that your photographer can consistently achieve exceptional results all day long including when the light is bad and the action is flowing!

Traditional: This is most likely what Mum wants and expects to see from her wedding photographer… formal poses, if done correctly should be pleasing to the eye, well exposed and provide a good record of who attended your wedding day. A good wedding photographer should be capable of taking great formals in a sensible amount of time without holding everybody up all day and while still paying attention to details. He or she will also need to necessary people skills to be able to ‘lead’ a group of guests where and when they want them, whilst still smiling and keeping eveybody happy!

So what’s our style then?

My style is to combine a mixture of all the above – with the emphasis being on fun, natural and informal photography. I want to show how everybody enjoyed your wedding day – not just who turned up! By providing a mixture of natural unposed (candid) photography with a handful of formal photos to keep Mum happy(!) I believe we’ve developed the perfect combination of styles for your wedding photography.

For most of the day I’ll unobtrusively blend in to capture the real moments as they happen – and you’ll often forget I’m even there! However, I shall also be sure to get a beautiful selection of highly individual, unique and romantic photographs of the bride and groom together.

By shooting this way we provide a very modern, stylish account of your wedding day that you’ll appreciate for years to come.
